OUR PURPOSE (or why we exist)
In 1959, Bob and Jewel Evans donated 360+ acres of land in Gallia County to the Methodist Church for persons in Southeastern Ohio to have a place to gather for Christian camping. It is our desire to keep that vision alive for all persons in our region. Southeastern Ohio has felt the impact of social and economic breakdowns. We have seen what these failures can do to families and individuals. Most counties in our region are below the U. S. guidelines for poverty and have above average unemployment. Wages in the area are typically lower than state average with fewer or no benefits. Drug abuse continues to plague families and communities. Evans Christian Outfitters, formerly known as Camp Asbury, is a place where persons of all ages can come to experience the love of God in a safe, natural and uplifting environment. It is a sacred space for spiritually healing. Since many persons in our area cannot afford to travel great distances or pay for lavish outdoor experiences, the camp offers an affordable alternative close to home. Although we target the tri-state Appalachian area, we have welcomed groups from all parts of Ohio.
II. OUR VISION (or who we are)
Vision Statement: To provide Christian camping spiritual experiences for children, youth and adults in Southeastern Ohio so that they may encounter the love of Jesus Christ.
Evans Christian Outfitters is operated by an ecumenical group of pastors and lay persons from a variety of church backgrounds including United Methodists, Lutherans, Baptists and Christian Non-Denominational churches. The “Friends of Camp Asbury (FOCA)” Board of Trustees serves as the administrators of the camp.
III. OUR VALUES (or what we believe)
● The Triune God- Father (Creator), Son (Redeemer) and Holy Spirit (Sustainer)
● The Scriptures as contained in the Old and New Testaments
● The fallen nature of humanity and the forgiveness of sin through the work of Jesus Christ
● The gift of God’s grace in prevenient, justifying and sanctifying forms
● Repentance from a sinful existence toward a new life through the power of the Holy Spirit
● The importance of Christian family morals and ideals
● Disciplined living and service to others as a response to God’s love
IV. OUR MISSION: (or how we operate)
Mission Statement: Evans Christian Outfitters exists as an extension of the Christian Church, to provide a natural environment where people can take time to enrich their personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and prepare for service to others while discovering God’s will for their lives.
We will fulfill our mission through one of two ways: Sponsored Camps and Guest Groups.
Sponsored Camps include all camps that FOCA promotes and hosts. These camps normally take place in the summer and are offered to children and youth. Typically, these camps are in June and July. All camps are programmed according to age levels. Camps are staffed by seasoned pastors and lay persons. These trained and trusted leaders provide scriptural holiness in a safe, welcoming and engaging manner. Hundreds of decisions for Christ have been documented and numerous baptisms have been performed at the lake. All activities and food service are organized by the Camp Dean and his/her assistants. In the future, sponsored camps will also include Fall and Spring age appropriate offerings.
Guest Groups include all other groups using the camp. A contract, rental agreement and guidelines for camp use are adhered to. These groups typically have use of all the facilities of the camp. Guest groups are responsible for all staffing, programming and food service. Guest groups usually include: church youth groups, church picnics, church men’s groups, church women’s groups, church Vacation Bible Schools, church Board Retreats, parachurch groups, work camps (partnered with Jackson Area Ministries), prayer retreats, reunions, trainings, college ministries, Stephen’s Ministries retreats and sports groups.
